Impact Auditorium Update - Thursday 16 August 2018
On Thursday 2 August 2018, the Kapiti Impact Trust (KIT) Trustees made the difficult decision to discontinue use of Impact Auditorium until further notice. The practical and immediate impact of that decision was that our Kapiti Impact Church services could no longer be held in that building but would need to shift to another venue for the foreseeable future.
With the availability of other spaces on the Impact Hub property, a team of hardworking volunteers enabled us to move everything required and to set up our new venue, Grace Hall (with associated Kid's Ministry spaces), in time for our first service there on 5 August. Grace Hall is located at Impact Hub - 6 Tongariro Street, Paraparaumu.
Before we tendered for (and eventually purchased) the property, we knew that the Auditorium had earthquake issues. The Elders/Trustees have taken that into account when making decisions related to the property. For example, the valuation that we had done prior to the property settlement didn't include the value of the Auditorium.
We have been using the Auditorium for just under a year and have been comfortable doing so based on a report that KCDC had commissioned in 2016. The Council's report rated the building as having some issues but not significant enough for them to require us to do any short/medium term work on it or to stop using it. In other words, it was a safe building for us to continue to use for our services.
Despite this assurance, the Elders/Trustees wanted to investigate further with the goal of quantifying what work needed to be done to the building to increase it's rating even further. We commissioned an Engineer to do a detailed survey of the building and provide us with the assessment. The Engineer's preliminary report indicated that the issues with the building were more significant than originally indicated and further advice the Trustees have received led them to the decision to discontinue use of the Auditorium until we get more information about the next options.
We are grateful that we own other buildings that can accomodate our services without too much hassle. For us, there is a clear sense of peace, that God is working amongst us and that He continues to go before us leading us into all He has for us as a church community.
If you have any questions, please chat to or email one of the KIT Trustees - Lawrence Kirby, Debbie Mattingley, Tim Smith or Nick Marston. (email theirfirstname@kit.org.nz)
